Covered in bruises, his skin red andsmarting, this sobbing eight-year-old has
just been stripped to hisunderwear, tied to a tree and beaten by his father.
If that wasn’t shocking enough, many in thesizeable crowd that gathered around
applauded as the father lashed him with astick.
The boy from Nanchong in Sichuan province,south-west China, skipped classes
after receiving the equivalent of £10 fromhis father.
He had also reportedly failed to return ontime earlier in the week. After
driving around the city in search of his son,the father caught him near a market
and exacted his punishment.
The picture taker, Lin Gang, said that thetemperature was only 5C when theall
but naked child was tied to the tree and beaten.
Corporal punishment of the kind meted outto the Nanchong boy is lawful in China,
although there are legal provisions toprevent excessive child abuse.
The law even goes to far as to allowauthorities to order parents to subject
their children to 'strict discipline'if they are guilty of serious misbehaviour.
Traditionally, corporal punishment iscommon among Chinese families, although
attitudes are beginning to change inthe country.

Oh a bit severe, but, I bet he doesn't skipschool again!

Awful. That is absolutely awful. Thehumiliation that the poor boy must have
suffered in addition to the physicalabuse is horrendous. Very upsetting. I
actually feel sick.

A little bit excessive, but discipliningchildren make them better adults. We all
need to learn the boundaries ofgood/bad behavior. The lack of discipline is
ruining our Western countries.

The father may have gone a bit far, but atleast he cares about his son's
education, which is more than can be said forthe average Brit...

Don't be stupid. That's simply not true

You may see this abuse but I see this asdisciplining. Read the contents. The boy
is trouble. Asian has a different wayof dealing with errant children and believe
me I have had my fair share ofbeing chased around and caned and I turned out
fine. It is those who aremollycoddled that in the end take guns to schools and
gun down their classmates.

Bit over the top , but I bet he turns upfor school now.

But he will hate his parents for ever! What a trade off.

This is abuse. Disgusting.
Jeremy,Manchester, United Kingdom, 10 hours ago
very depressing reading people say thingslike "bet he won't do it again". There
are a range of more suitablepunishments that could have been used. Disgustingly
cruel method.

If this happened here in the UK socialworkers would have had him in care. Maybe
all social workers need to go toChina and see what real abuse is. They can't
seem to identify what abuse is andwho is doing the abusing.

Can not believe people are stood aroundjust watching? But I guess it's because
this is normal over there because I'msure it it happened England there would be
an outrage. I can't believe this islegal?!

No wonder the poor kid didn't come home. Iwas going to say that I hope he has
been removed from his family .... butreally, I hope the father has been removed,
and into prison for child abuse andassault. Poor little mite.
